Ceramics
My intention for building vessels focused on the process without a particular end result in mind. I worked intuitively, conscious of how the clay moved and felt in my hands. Over a period of two weeks, I created over 40 vessels that were seemingly fine but, in reality, were rather flawed. Some were bottom heavy while others experienced glaze issues during firing. Flaws often deplete the worth in objects. This idea not only applies to inanimate objects and consumables. How often do humans deem themselves less worthy due to flaws? What can we do to highlight these “defects” to bring more value to these objects and ourselves?
I used bright gold underglaze to highlight the “flaws” of the objects. The area with gold then becomes the most precious part. This method is heavily inspired by the Japanese art of mending broken pottery named, Kintsugi.
